How to Get Google AdSense Approval in 2026 (Step by Step)

MoneyForge Team 2026-02-15 13 min read

Google AdSense is still the easiest way to start monetizing a website. But Google's approval standards have gotten stricter. Here is exactly what you need to get approved.

Prerequisites Before You Apply

1. A proper domain name. AdSense no longer accepts free subdomains (like yoursite.blogspot.com or yoursite.wordpress.com). You need a custom domain. It does not need to be a .com — .net, .org, .co, and country-specific TLDs all work.

2. Sufficient content. Google wants to see a real website, not a placeholder. Minimum requirements:

  • At least 15-20 high-quality articles (500+ words each, ideally 1,000+)
  • Content organized into clear categories
  • An About page, Contact page, and Privacy Policy page
  • A logical site navigation structure

3. Original content only. Every word must be original. Google checks for plagiarism and duplicate content. Do not spin articles. Do not copy from other sites. Do not use AI to generate content without significant human editing and value-add.

4. Compliance with policies. Your content must not include prohibited topics: adult content, violence, illegal activities, copyrighted material, or misleading claims. Review the AdSense program policies before applying.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Prepare your site. Before applying, make sure your site is complete:

  • Write at least 20 articles on a consistent topic or niche
  • Create mandatory pages: About, Contact, Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, Disclaimer
  • Ensure your site loads fast and is mobile-responsive
  • Remove any "under construction" pages or broken links

Step 2: Apply for AdSense. Go to adsense.google.com, sign in with a Google account, and add your site. Google will give you a code snippet to place in your site header.

Step 3: Add the AdSense code. Place the verification code in the <head> section of your site. For WordPress, use a header insertion plugin. For custom sites, add it directly to your HTML template.

Step 4: Wait for review. Google's review process takes 1-4 weeks. During this time, Google crawls your site, evaluates content quality, and checks for policy compliance. Do not make major changes to your site during this period.

Step 5: Get approved (or fix issues). If approved, you can start placing ad units immediately. If rejected, Google will tell you the reason. Fix the issue and reapply.

Common Rejection Reasons and Fixes

"Insufficient content": You need more articles or more depth per article. Write 5-10 more high-quality, original articles (1,000+ words) and reapply.

"Low value content": Your content is thin, generic, or not useful. Rewrite articles with more depth, original insights, and specific value for readers. Remove any content that reads like it was auto-generated.

"Violating policies": You have prohibited content, copyright violations, or misleading claims. Remove the offending content and review all AdSense policies.

"Site navigation issues": Google cannot easily navigate your site. Ensure you have a clear menu, category pages, and internal linking.

"Missing required pages": Add Privacy Policy, About, and Contact pages if they are missing.

"Domain too new": Some new domains get rejected if they have very little content or traffic. Wait a month, publish more content, and reapply.

How Much Can You Earn?

AdSense earnings depend on your niche, traffic, and ad placement. Typical ranges:

  • Low-paying niches (entertainment, general news): $1-5 RPM (revenue per 1,000 pageviews)
  • Medium niches (lifestyle, food, travel): $5-15 RPM
  • High-paying niches (finance, insurance, tech, legal): $15-50+ RPM

A site with 10,000 monthly pageviews in a medium niche might earn $50-150/month from AdSense. The same traffic in a high-paying niche could earn $150-500/month.

Beyond AdSense

AdSense is the starting point, not the end goal. As your traffic grows, explore:

  • Ezoic: Higher RPMs than AdSense for sites with 10,000+ monthly visitors
  • Mediavine: Premium ad management for sites with 50,000+ sessions/month (RPMs of $20-50+)
  • Affiliate marketing: Often more profitable than ads for product-focused sites
  • Sponsored content: Direct deals with brands in your niche
  • Digital products: Your own ebooks, courses, or tools

Start with AdSense. It gets you in the game. Then upgrade to better monetization as you grow.
